Coğrafya Doktora programı, ders ve tez dönemi şeklinde iki dönemden oluşur. Ders Planında iki yarıyıla göre belirlenen toplam 21 kredilik (60 AKTS) ders alınması gerekir. İkinci aşamada ise toplam 180 AKTS krediye eşdeğer altı yarıyıl içinde tez hazırlanır ve tez jüri önünde savunulur.
- Coğrafyanın temel kavramsal bilgilerine sahiptir ve kavramlar arası ilişkilere hakimdir.
- Coğrafya lisans yeterliliklerinin sağladığı temel üzerinden verileri işleyerek bilgi üretme, araştırma yapma ve uygulama becerisine sahiptir.
- Doğal ve kültürel çevrenin işleyiş kuralları, değişimin neden ve sonuçlarına ilişkin temel bilgiye sahiptir.
- Coğrafi verilerin toplanması, değerlendirilmesi ve yorumlanması becerisine sahiptir.
- Coğrafya alanında sınırlı ya da eksik verileri kullanarak bilimsel yöntemlerle bilgiyi geliştirir, kullanır ve çözüm üretir.
- Coğrafya alanındaki güncel gelişmeleri ve kendi çalışmalarını yazılı, sözlü ve görsel olarak sistemli bir şekilde aktarır.
- Özümsedikleri coğrafi bilgiyi ve problem çözme yeteneklerini, disiplinler arası çalışmalarda uygular.
- Coğrafi bir sorunsala yönelik bir araştırmayı bağımsız veya ekip olarak tamamlayarak alana bilimsel katkı yapar.

- Coğrafî literatürü takip edip kullanabilecek ve meslektaşları ile iletişim kurabilecek düzeyde yabancı dil bilgisine sahiptir. (en az Avrupa Dil Portföyü B1 Genel Düzeyi)
- Coğrafi bilginin toplanması, değerlendirilmesi ve aktarılmasında toplumsal ve bilimsel etik değerlere bağlıdır.
- Bölgelerin ve yerlerin çeşitliliğini ve karşılıklı bağımlılığını coğrafi perspektif ile çözümler.
- Alanındaki uygulamalarda karşılaşacağı öngörülmeyen karmaşık durumlarda, yeni stratejik yaklaşımlar geliştirebilir ve sorumluluk alarak çözüm üretir.
