It is a higher education program that encompasses an eight-semester curriculum based on secondary education qualifications and provides training aimed at a specific field of study or profession.

Architecture can be expressed as the art of constructing spaces necessary for people to facilitate their lives and sustain activities such as sheltering, entertaining, resting, and working, while reconciling aesthetic and functional requirements with technical and managerial obligations. It can also be defined in terms of durability, usability, and beauty, or as an evolving art influenced by societal structure, community needs, economic data, and technological advancements. An architect can be defined as an artist and scientist who designs buildings and manages their implementation. The primary aim of architectural education is to train architects who possess the qualifications to fulfill the profession of architecture. Architecture is a discipline that draws on knowledge from the humanities, social and physical sciences, technology, environmental sciences, creative arts, and general sciences.

Located within the KTÜ Kanuni Campus, our department benefits from many physical and social opportunities provided by the campus structure and life. It features technologically equipped classrooms and workshops, as well as a versatile Architecture Laboratory and a Computer Laboratory. The classrooms can be used for both theoretical courses and studio work. Additionally, the wide corridors in front of the classrooms can serve as social communication and working spaces.

Upon successful completion of this programme, students will be able to:

• Understand to express every stage of programming and design process as formal to prepare suitable presentations with hand drawing and some other technics that computer technologies are used in.
• Classify and commentate the visual and written information during the architectural and urban design process to use on creating and editing the project.
• Learn the visual perception of two and three dimensioned architectural and urban design, and understand the occurring, developing and application of editing policies.
• Understand the importance and affects of historical environment to the national and regional architecture and urban design.
• Understand the required basic techniques to document the historical buildings, and to prepare measurement drawings and restoration projects by recognizing the historical environment and obtaining consciousness of protection.
• Understand the interaction between environment-human-culture, different behavior patterns, social and spatial network and perceive the responsibility of finding and analyzing user's requirements.
• Understand the importance of natural and artificial sources “protection and creating healthier buildings and settlements” depending on the importance of sustainability in architecture and urban design decisions.
• Gain the decision-making skills on building, interior design and settlement levels by learning the principles of basic architectural design.
• Gain the skills to evaluate, choice and integrate to design process, the structure, building shell systems, security and building services systems.
• Understand the basic principles of lighting, acoustics, air conditioning and energy usage subjects in the design of environmental systems.
• Understand the basics of building service system designs comprised of building installation, electrical equipment, vertical circulation, communication, fire protection and life safety.
• Will be able to understand the principles and standards about the usage and application of building materials and components.
• Understand the basic principles of project management, finance, building economy and cost control, office organization, work planning, marketing, risk reduction-connection and leadership within the architectural project.
• Understand the architect’s professional ethics and legal responsibilities about subject as property rights, development and housing regulations, user rights which affects the building design, construction and architectural studies for public health, security and welfare.

Students are subject to midterm assessments (projects, seminars, quizzes, assignments, or midterm exams) and a final exam for each course. The contribution of midterm assessments to the final grade is 50%, and the contribution of the final exam is also 50%. All exams are evaluated out of 100 points. There is a requirement to score at least 45 points on the final exam. Students who receive one of the letter grades (AA), (BA), (BB), (CB), or (CC) in a course are considered to have passed that course. The evaluation of the Graduation Project is conducted within the framework of the "Graduation Principles of the Architecture Department."

There should be no exams in "Architectural Project" courses at KTU Department of Architecture. Grades falling in the CC range are given as FD or FF.

In order to supervise the quality of higher education programmes;

• YÖK is responsible of planning, organising, managing and supervising higher education institution's educational and other activities. •YÖK prepares "University Monitoring and Evaluation Reports" within its own criteria and publishes these reports annually. YÖK prepares reports that include qualitative and quantitative evaluations of higher education institutions in accordance with these annual reports and shares them with general public.

• The "Foundation Higher Education Institutions Report", which includes academic, administrative and financial data of foundation higher education institutions, is published by YÖK annually. These reports, which include quantitative and qualitative evaluations made for foundation higher education institutions, are shared with the public by YÖK.

Quality assurance of undergraduate programs in higher education is provided according to "Procedures and Principles for Quality Assurance of Higher Education Diploma Programmes":

1. Establishment and Approval of Curricula 

YÖK determines the minimum standards and criteria required to open undergraduate programmes in higher education institutions.

1.1. In higher education institutions, the curriculum of undergraduate programmes and the learning outcomes each program will bring to the student are determined by the senates of higher education institutions in accordance with the basic principles determined by YÖK on these issues. 

1.2. After the curriculum of National Core Education Programmes is accepted by the relevant Deans Council, it is implemented by higher education institutions with the approval of YÖK.

2. Assessment and Evaluation: How to measure and evaluate the learning outcomes that each undergraduate programme will bring to the student is carried out in accordance with the teaching and examination regulations prepared by higher education institutions in accordance with the basic principles determined by YÖK.

3. Certification: Students enrolled in undergraduate programmes who successfully complete the course credits and other obligations determined by higher education institutions; receive an undergraduate diploma.

4. Self Evaluation-External Evaluation: In the context of continuous monitoring, higher education institutions enter the "Internal Evaluation Reports" of the previous year into the Information System prepared by the Higher Education Quality Board (YÖKAK) at the beginning of each year. YÖKAK shares the "Institutional Feedback Report" prepared for the external evaluation of higher education institutions. In addition, the accreditation decisions made by the accreditation bodies authorized or recognized by YÖKAK also show that the quality of programmes' qualifications is assured. YÖKAK carries out regular review activities regarding the qualifications determined in accordance with its legislation.

KTÜ is continuously improving its internal quality assurance system under the motto of depth in quality, within the framework of its mission, vision, strategic goals, and objectives, as well as the policies established in this context. The quality assurance system, which is based on the principle of collaboration with stakeholders and adopts a participatory and inclusive approach, encompasses all processes and actions of KTÜ; it ensures the continuous improvement and sustainability of activities in education and training, research, and societal contribution, as well as the satisfaction of stakeholders.

The components of KTÜ's Quality Assurance System (KGS) include:

With the decision no. 1 taken at the 9th Term 8th Meeting of the Architectural Accreditation Board dated July 20, 2023, our KTÜ Architecture (Turkish) Undergraduate Program has been entitled to the "CONDITIONAL 6-YEAR ACCREDITATION" specified in Article 7.2 of the MIAK Processes (2021) document.

In Turkey, to gain the right to higher education, it is necessary to take the Student Selection Examination (ÖSS). The results of this exam are considered for admission to many undergraduate programs. Candidates who take the exam and achieve a certain score make their program preferences and submit them to the Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM), which is affiliated with the Higher Education Council (YÖK). ÖSYM organizes the applications it receives, starting from the highest score, grouping them according to score types (such as Language, Turkish, Science, and Social Sciences, etc.), and ranks all suitable programs based on the candidates' preferences. Placement in appropriate programs is carried out according to the quotas set by higher education institutions and the candidates' preferences.

Candidates who successfully complete their undergraduate education can pursue graduate (master's and doctoral) programs, provided they obtain a valid score on the ALES exam and possess a sufficient level of English language proficiency.
