Profile of the Programme:

The PhD Program in Private Law is made up of courses that focus on contemporary legal issues in the fields of “labor and social security law, civil law, civil procedural law, private international law, and commercial law.” Students must take two compulsory courses, five elective courses and one seminar course and are deemed completed their course requirements upon successfully passing their courses. Following the completion of the course process, the students take the Ph.D qualifying exam and they can graduate from the program upon successfully defending their theses under the supervision of the academic advisor.

Assessment and Grading:

The evaluation criteria of the courses in the Ph.D Program in Private Law are announced to the students by each academic staff at the beginning of the semester. In each course, at least one mid-term assessment in the form of a written examination, project work, assignment or oral presentation, and a minimum of one final assessment are applied. The academic staffs grade the students at the end of each semester by considering attendance, mid-term examination, project work, assignments or oral presentation assignments and final examination.

Examinations are graded over a scale of 100 points. The passing grade is 80. The failed students must retake the course within the time frame allowed to complete the PhD Program or take other courses accepted by the Department Private Law of the Graduate School as equivalent to the elective courses.

Mode of Study:

The language of instruction at the Ph.D Program in Private Law at Çankaya University is Turkish.

Recognition of Prior Learning:

Students who have successfully completed at least one semester in a Ph.D Program in Private Law at another university or higher education institution may apply for lateral transfer to the Ph.D Program in Private Law at Çankaya University. The applicants may be admitted upon the recommendation of the Department of Graduate School and the decision by the Administrative Board of the Graduate School provided that the students apply with the necessary documents in due time. In order for these applicants to be admitted, the Ph.D Program of the Department of Private Law of the Graduate School must have a student quota and the applicants must satisfy the admission requirements during the transfer application. In the decision of the Board, which courses the student is exempted from and how many semesters s/he has been deemed completed are stated. The conditions for special studentship, lateral transfer, course substitution from a previously registered graduate program and exemption from one or more courses are decided by the Administrative Board of the Graduate School upon the proposal by the Department of Private Law of the Graduate School.

Access to Further Studies:

The graduates of the Ph.D Program in Private Law can continue their education in Turkey or abroad by applying for post-doctoral research fellowships opened by many institutions and organizations.

In admission to PhD Program in Private Law, applicants are assessed on the basis of their ALES (Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Examination or Turkish equivalent of GRE) score (minimum 60), the results of the written scientific evaluation exam and interview. For applicants holding an LL.M degree, the GPA of his/her LL.M degree is also taken into account. These applicants must satisfy the general application requirements as well as the scientific evaluation held by the Department of Graduate School in order to be admitted to the Program. Applicants with a bachelor's-degree-only must have a minimum score of 3.00 out of 4.00 GPA or an equivalent score, and s/he must have an ALES score of not less than 80 points of the type of point required by the Program. The scientific evaluation is conducted through a written exam, and additionally an interview is held. The entry success scores of candidates for Ph.D Program are calculated as follows: 50% of ALES score or 50% of an equivalent test score (this is 65% for applicants with bachelor's-degree-only), 15% of GPA of his/her LL.M, and 35% of the interview and the written scientific evaluation exam (the percentages of the each of the latter two are determined by the Department of Graduate School). Candidates with a score of 50 and above in each of the written exam and interview and with a total entry success score of 60 points or more are deemed successful. Successful candidates are ranked starting from the highest entry success score and placed in the Program within the determined quota.

For the enrollment of the admitted candidates to the Program, the following conditions / documents are required:

1. A bachelor's degree or LL.M degree,
2. At least 60 points from the Foreign Language Proficiency Test (YDS) or an equivalent score from one of the nationally or internationally recognized exams accepted as the equivalent by the Centre of Assessment, Selection and Placement (ÖSYM),
3. At least 3.00 out of 4.00, or 70.00 out of 100.00 GPA in the undergraduate program,
4. At least 60 points in the Weighted Grade of ALES conducted by ÖSYM,
5. Payment of the tuition fee,
6. Fulfillment of other obligations declared by the University.

The graduate of the Ph.D Program in Private Law of the Graduate School of Social Sciences at Çankaya University shall be eligible, as directed by their areas of specialization, to work as a judge in civil and administrative courts, prosecutor, lawyer, notary, governor, district governor, legal advisor and expert at public institutions, manager at private institutions or academician at universities.
