• Izmir University of Economics, Department of Sociology in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, exhibits significant differences in terms of both the content of the course program and the goals regarding the qualifications that graduating students should have. While not neglecting theoretical courses, the understanding of "applied sociology," which contemporary sociology departments particularly emphasize, stands out in the structuring of the course program. Therefore, courses related to statistics and research methods are balanced with theoretical courses, aiming to equip students graduating from the department with skills in planning, conducting, analyzing, and reporting sociological research projects.

• Learning occurs through formal, open, or distance education modalities. Additionally, practical training takes place either within the laboratories and workshops of higher education institutions or through internships or workplace training in industries, healthcare institutions, or businesses.

• To have the knowledge of classical and contemporary theories in sociology, and be able to comparatively analyze these theories.
• To have the knowledge of main methodological approaches in sociology as well as social research and data analysis methods.
• To have knowledge in the fields of general sociology, sociology of institutions, social structure and change, and applied sociology.
• To be able to determine the appropriate methods in the design of the planning stage and conclusion of a sociological project, individually or as part of a team.
• To be able to diagnose the social dynamics behind personal problems by using sociological imagination.
• To be able to define social problems at local, national, and global levels, and offer new policies for solutions.
• To be able to apply commonly-used computer programs for data collection and analysis in sociological research.
• To be able to develop a socially responsible, scientific and ethical perspective regarding the collection, analysis, interpretation and presentation of data.
• To be able to analyze different aspects of the social world by drawing on the knowledge produced by other disciplines of the social sciences.
• To be able to constantly renew herself/himself professionally by following scientific and technological developments in sociology and social research.
• To be able to collect sociological data and communicate with sociologists and other social scientists in a foreign language ("European Language Portfolio Global Scale", Level B1).
• To be able to speak a second foreign at a medium level of fluency efficiently.
• To be able to relate the knowledge accumulated throughout the human history to their field of expertise.

For each course taken at IUE, the student is given one of the letter grades below by the instructor as the semester course grade.  Each grade has also its as ECTS grade equivalent

In order to be successful in a course, short cycle (associate degree) and first cycle (bachelor’s degree) students have to get a grade of at least DD, second cycle (master's degree) students have to get a grade of at least CC, and third cycle (Ph.D.) students have to get a grade of at least CB to pass a course. For courses which are not included in the cumulative GPA, students need to get a grade of S.

Apart from that, each local grade has it is equivalent ECTS grade which makes it more easier to transfer the grades of mobility periods of students. The chart above shows the ECTS grading system at IUE.

Also, among the Letter Grades;

Grade of I (Incomplete), is given to students who are not able to meet all the course requirements at the end of the semester or summer school due to a valid justification accepted by the instructor. Students who receive a letter grade “I” must complete their missing course requirements and receive a letter grade within one week following the date the end of semester grades or summer school grades submitted. However, in the event of special cases, this period can be extended until two weeks before the beginning of registration for the next semester, upon the recommendation of the respective Graduate School department head and the decision of that academic unit’s administrative board. Otherwise, grade of “I” will automatically become grade of FF, or grade of U.

Grade of S (Satisfactory) is given to students who are successful in non-credited courses.

Grade of U (Unsatisfactory) is given to students who are unsuccessful in non-credited courses.

Grade of P (Successful Progress) is given to students, who continue to the courses that are not included in the GPA that has a period exceeding one semester, and regularly performs the academic studies for the respective semester.

Grade of NP (Not Successful Progress) is given to students, who do not regularly perform the academic studies for the respective semester for courses that are not included in the GPA and have a period exceeding one semester.

Grade of EX (Exempt), is given to students who are exempt from some of the courses in the curriculum.

Grade of NI (Not included) is issued to identify the courses taken by the student in the program or programs which are not included in the GPA of the student. This grade is reported in the students’ transcripts with the respective letter grade. Such courses are not counted as the courses in the program that the student is registered to.

Grade of W (Withdrawal) is used for the courses that the student withdraws from in the first ten weeks of the semester following the add/drop period, upon the recommendation of his/ her advisor and the permission of the instructor that teaches the course. A student is not allowed to withdraw from courses during the first two semesters of his/ her associate/undergraduate degree program and from those courses he/she has to repeat and received grade “W” before, which are not included in the grade average. A student is allowed to withdraw from one course, including double major, minor, or certificate program courses, at the most in one semester, and two courses at the most during his/ her associate degree study, and six courses during his/her undergraduate study upon the recommendation of the advisor and the permission of the instructor that teaches the course. A student has to take the course that he/she withdrew from, the first semester in which it is offered. In accordance with the protocols made between Izmir University of Economics and educational institutions or official authorities abroad, the exchange program students being educated at Izmir University of Economics may withdraw from courses upon the recommendation of International Relations Office Directorate and the permission of the instructor. In this case, the rules concerning the grade of “W” will not be applied.

Grade “NA” (Non-Attendance) is issued by the instructor for students who fail to fulfil the attendance and/or requirements of the course and/or who lose their right to take the end of semester exam because they failed to take any of the exams administered throughout the semester. Grade “NA” is considered as 0, 00 (zero) in taking the averages.

Both the ECTS grades and the local grades of the students are displayed on the official transcript of the students.

To oversee the quality of higher education programs;

- YÖK is responsible for planning, organizing, managing and supervising education and training and other activities in higher education institutions.

- "University Monitoring and Evaluation Reports" of higher education institutions prepared within the framework of the criteria determined by YÖK are published every year. The reports prepared according to these reports, including quantitative and qualitative evaluations of higher education institutions, are shared with the public by YÖK.

- "Foundation Higher Education Institutions Report" containing academic, administrative and financial data of foundation higher education institutions is published annually by CoHE. These reports, which include quantitative and qualitative evaluations of foundation higher education institutions, are shared with the public by YÖK. Quality assurance of undergraduate programs in higher education is ensured according to the "Procedures and Principles for Ensuring Quality Assurance of Higher Education Diploma Programs":

1. Creation and Approval of Curricula: YÖK determines the minimum standards and criteria required for the opening of undergraduate departments and programs in higher education institutions.

1.1. The curriculum of undergraduate programs in higher education institutions and the learning outcomes that each program will provide to the student are determined by the senates of higher education institutions in accordance with the basic principles determined by YÖK on these issues.

1.2. The curricula of the National Core Curricula are adopted by the relevant Council of Deans and implemented by higher education institutions with the approval of the Council of Higher Education.

2. Assessment and Evaluation: The measurement and evaluation of the learning outcomes of each undergraduate program is carried out according to the teaching and examination regulations prepared by higher education institutions in accordance with the basic principles determined by YÖK on these issues.

3. Certification: Students enrolled in undergraduate programs, if they successfully complete the course credits and other obligations determined by higher education institutions; receive a bachelor's diploma.

4. Self-Assessment-External Evaluation: Higher education institutions, in the context of continuous monitoring, enter the "Institutional Internal Evaluation Reports" of the previous year into the Information System prepared by the Higher Education Quality Council (YÖKAK) at the beginning of each year. YÖKAK shares the "Institutional Feedback Report" prepared for the external evaluation of higher education institutions with the public. In addition, accreditation decisions issued by accreditation bodies authorized or recognized by YÖKAK also indicate that the quality assurance of the qualifications of the programs is ensured. YÖKAK conducts regular review activities regarding the qualifications determined in accordance with the legislation.

The Sociology Department's undergraduate program at İzmir University of Economics has been accredited for 5 years by the Association for Evaluation and Accreditation of University Programs in Mathematical, Natural and Social Sciences (FEDEK) after being evaluated and found to meet the necessary criteria.

• İzmir University of Economics admits students through the Higher Education Institutions Examination (YKS) organized by ÖSYM (Student Selection and Placement Center). The Sociology Department admits students through the Equal Weight (EA) score type in the YKS. Students are accepted into the program with either a 100% or 50% tuition scholarship. The Sociology Department does not offer fully paid tuition. Additionally, students who are among the top 250,000 candidates nationwide in the EA score type and list Izmir University of Economics Sociology Department among their top 10 preferences are entitled to benefit from a 50% tuition scholarship as well as an additional 25% Basic Sciences Preference Discount provided by the University. General registration admission procedures at Izmir University of Economics are carried out by the university, and academic registration procedures are implemented by the deanship. • In addition to the YKS, students are also accepted into the program through lateral and vertical transfers. Admission through lateral transfer, both from outside and within the university, is conducted based on principles determined by the Senate in accordance with the "Regulation on Transition, Double Major, Minor, and Inter-Institutional Credit Transfer Between Associate and Bachelor's Degree Programs in Higher Education Institutions" published in the Official Gazette dated 24/4/2010 and other related legislation. Admission through vertical transfer, on the other hand, is carried out for vocational school graduates to transfer to university-affiliated undergraduate programs in accordance with the provisions of the "Regulation on the Continuation of Vocational Schools and Open Education Associate Degree Program Graduates to Bachelor's Degree Programs" published in the Official Gazette dated 19/2/2002.
• In accordance with the relevant legislation and university regulations, special student status is applied at Izmir University of Economics. Special students are those who are not enrolled in any associate or bachelor's degree program at İEÜ, but are expected to complete the requirements of a limited number of courses by enrolling in them. Admission of special students to associate-bachelor level courses is subject to approval by the department chair and/or dean/school director. Special students are not considered as students of the University and do not benefit from student rights. They receive a document indicating the courses they are enrolled in and the grades they receive upon request. This document does not substitute for a diploma or indicate an academic degree. Special students pay the fee determined by the University and are subject to the rules applied to all students of the University.
• The language of instruction in the program is English. Except for mandatory courses designated by YÖK (Council of Higher Education) such as Turkish Language and History of Revolution courses, all courses are conducted and evaluated in English throughout the program. Students admitted to the program are subject to the English Proficiency Determination Exam (EPDE). This exam is administered to determine the language proficiency levels of newly enrolled students who will attend the English preparatory program. Students who score 69.50 and above in the EPDE are eligible to take the English Proficiency Exam (EPE). Students who do not obtain a sufficient score in the EPDE continue in the English preparatory program based on their scores. The ability of students who obtain a sufficient score in the EPDE to follow the academic level courses in terms of language proficiency is determined by the EPE. This exam measures students' language skills and competencies in grammar, reading, listening, note-taking, written expression, and oral expression. Students who score 64.50 and above in the EPE proceed to the course stage of the program, while those who score below this value continue in the English preparatory program according to their scores.

• Holders of a bachelor's degree can continue to master's programs and doctoral and proficiency in art programs accepted with a bachelor's degree, provided that they meet the relevant conditions.
• Undergraduate students have the right to participate in the double major programs opened by the higher education institutions they are studying at. Students enrolled in double major programs can take courses from two diploma programs simultaneously and, if they are successful, they can receive two separate bachelor's degrees.
• Our graduates can work in various positions in the private sector, public institutions, and civil society organizations or pursue an academic career.
• For sociology graduates, employment opportunities in the public sector include ministries such as Family, Labor and Social Services, Health, Justice, Agriculture, National Education, Culture and Tourism, Youth and Sports, and Interior Affairs; Regional Development Agencies; TÜBITAK (The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey); YÖK (The Council of Higher Education); TRT (Turkish Radio and Television Corporation); Turkish Statistical Institute; General Directorate of Security; National Agency; Turkish Patent Institute, and municipalities. In the private sector, companies operating in media, advertising, public relations, human resources, marketing, research, consulting, and strategic development fields provide employment opportunities for sociologists. Moreover, organizations such as the United Nations and its affiliated bodies like the United Nations Development Programme, UNICEF, UNHCR, UNESCO, as well as institutions like the World Health Organization, World Bank, International Labour Organization, Food and Agriculture Organization, and International Organization for Migration offer career opportunities for sociologists.
