In alignment with the academic atmosphere of our university and faculty, the mission of the Turkish Language and Literature Department, as a branch of social sciences, is to cultivate scholars who:

• Comprehend the principles and functioning of science, equipped with the ability to analyze and synthesize;
• Conduct qualified scientific research and studies in their field;
• Possess an interdisciplinary perspective, establishing connections between Turkish Language and Literature and other fields, as well as between positive sciences and various aspects of life;

Our faculty consists of 165 offices, 35 classrooms, 30 laboratories, 2 lecture halls, 6 seminar halls and a conference hall, with a total closed area of ​​16,560 m2, as well as field-specific classrooms and the Library Documentation Department, which constitute the learning environments.

• Possesses an advanced command of the Turkish language and effectively conveys thoughts in both written and oral forms.
• Understands and explains the fundamental concepts of Turkish Language and Literature, its relationship with other social sciences, as well as their similarities and differences.
• Has knowledge of lexicology, morphology, phonetics, and syntax related to the historical development of the Turkish language, including its historical and contemporary dialects.
• Is familiar with literary theories and employs various methods and criteria for approaching literary texts, analyzing findings, and drawing conclusions.
• Is well-versed in Turkish culture, collects and evaluates data related to Turkish culture, and interprets it within its context.
• Masters the basic concepts and theories of the field, discusses them, and applies or critiques this knowledge in relevant areas.
• Independently completes project cycles to investigate the historical context of any literary, cultural, or social issue, interprets findings, and develops solutions.
• Has knowledge of the historical periods of Turkish literature from its beginnings to the present day.
• Is open to interdisciplinary studies, conducting research and analysis at the intersections of literature and other social sciences, gathering data, and synthesizing findings.
• Follows international studies, developments, and scientific research in the field of Turkology, developing projects and events accordingly.

• The level of achievement of Program Outcomes is determined in line with student surveys administered at the end of each academic year, interviews with the Turkish Language and Literature Department Board and external stakeholders, as well as suggestions made by faculty members. In addition, surveys are conducted at the end of each semester to prove the compliance of the courses with the Program Outcomes. These surveys are used as a reference when making necessary updates at the end of the academic year. Moreover; Measurement and evaluation methods are also used through different methods such as homework, exams and presentations.

• Seminar presentations, event posters, panels, conferences and declarations made at the end of the semester, as well as department activities, are also evaluated among the measurement and evaluation methods.

Course success status and course letter grade

ARTICLE 31 – (1) Success in a course is determined by the end-of-semester letter grade. The letter grade a student receives from a course is obtained by evaluating together the semester work done in that course (such as midterm exams, assignments, practice) and the grades received in the final exam.

(2) Relative or absolute evaluation system is used in letter grade calculation. The decision regarding this is appreciated by the relevant faculty member.

(3) In the relative evaluation system, the letter grade is determined based on the average and statistical distribution of the grades of the students enrolled in that course.

(4) In the absolute evaluation system, the letter grade corresponding to the student's end-of-term grade point average is determined according to the table below.

The Senate may change the letter system, letter spacing and/or coefficients when deemed necessary.

(5) The letter grades of other courses that are not included in the grade point average and do not have local credit are as follows:
a) Successful (S) is given to students who are successful in non-credit courses.
b) Unsuccessful (U) is given to students who fail courses that do not require credit.
(6) Incomplete (I) is given to students who have met the attendance requirements but have not yet completed the requirements for grade evaluation.
If the student receives an (I) grade from any course, he/she must complete the deficiencies and receive a grade within ten business days from the date of announcement of the grades. At the end of this period, the (I) grade is evaluated by the instructor with the current grades and a letter grade is given. This period may be extended until the beginning of the next registration period in case of a prolonged illness or similar circumstances, upon the application of the student, the recommendation of the department chair and the decision of the unit board of directors. Otherwise, the (I) grade will be converted into (FF or U) grade by the system until the beginning of the course registrations for the following semester at the latest. The excuse application of the student who is given a grade of I is approved by the recommendation of the department head and the decision of the unit board of directors.
(7) (EX) (exempt) grade is given as a result of the student's exemption exams or in courses that the student has not taken before and is considered exempt.

(8) Failing grade (NA) due to absences; It is given to students who do not fulfill their attendance obligations, do not take any of the midterm and final exams, or fail because they cannot fulfill the conditions regarding course applications. (NA) grade is treated as (FF) grade in GPA calculation.

Students who receive one of the letter grades (9) (CC) and above are deemed to have succeeded that course.

(10) Students who receive one of the FF or FD letter grades from a course are considered unsuccessful in that course.

(11) Students with a GPA of 1.75 and above are considered conditionally successful in the courses in which they received DD and DC letter grades.

(12) Letter grades are entered into the system by the instructor and are finalized as soon as they are announced by the Registry Office.

In order to monitor the quality of higher education programs;

• YÖK is responsible for the planning, organization, management and supervision of education, training and other activities carried out in higher education institutions.

• "University Monitoring and Evaluation Reports" of higher education institutions, prepared every year within the framework of the criteria determined by YÖK, are published. Reports prepared according to these reports, containing quantitative and qualitative evaluations for higher education institutions, are also shared with the public by YÖK.

1. Creation and Approval of Curriculum:

1.1. YÖK determines the minimum standards and criteria required for the opening of undergraduate departments and programs in higher education institutions.

1.2. The curriculum of undergraduate programs in higher education institutions and the learning outcomes that each diploma program will bring to the student are determined by the senates of higher education institutions in accordance with the basic principles determined by YÖK on these issues.

1.3. The curriculum of National Core Education Programs is implemented by higher education institutions with the approval of YÖK.

2. Measurement-Evaluation: How to measure and evaluate the learning outcomes that each undergraduate program will provide to the student is carried out in accordance with the teaching and examination regulations prepared by higher education institutions in accordance with the basic principles determined by YÖK on these issues.

3. Certification: Students enrolled in undergraduate programs, if they successfully complete the course credits and other obligations determined by higher education institutions; receives a bachelor's degree.

4. Self-Evaluation-External Evaluation: In the context of continuous monitoring, higher education institutions enter the "Institution Internal Evaluation Reports" of the previous year into the Information System prepared by the Higher Education Quality Board (YÖKAK) at the beginning of each year. The "Institutional Feedback Report" prepared by YÖKAK regarding the external evaluation of higher education institutions is shared with the public. In addition, the accreditation process for the program is followed by the Association for Curriculum Evaluation and Accreditation (FEDEK) of the Faculties of Science, Literature, Language and History-Geography.

In addition, accreditation decisions made by accreditation bodies authorized or recognized by YÖKAK also show that the quality assurance of the qualifications of the programs is ensured. It carries out regular review activities regarding the qualifications determined in accordance with the YÖKAK legislation.

The general admission requirements for Turkish and international students apply to enrollment in the program. Depending on teaching capacities, the department has typically admitted an average of 80 undergraduate students annually. However, this number was reduced to 24 by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) for the 2024-2025 academic year.

Individuals who wish to pursue undergraduate education in the department must have successfully completed high school or an equivalent level of education and achieved a sufficient score in the university entrance exam. Registrations at our university are carried out in accordance with the provisions outlined in Article 5 of the Gaziantep University Associate and Undergraduate Education and Training Regulations (https://www.gantep.edu.tr/mevzuat/icerik.php?ID=378)

At the beginning of each academic term, students register for courses through the university's student automation system, following the academic calendar set by the Gaziantep University Senate. During course registration, students enroll in courses in line with the semester curriculum of the Turkish Language and Literature Program with the assistance of their academic advisors. Course registrations are submitted for advisor approval. Once reviewed and approved by the advisor, the registration is finalized, and students are provided with a course registration form signed by both the advisor and the student, listing the courses taken.

Students who qualify for admission based on their SÖZ score type and preference rankings in the centralized exam conducted by ÖSYM register in accordance with the principles determined by the Higher Education Council (YÖK), ÖSYM, and our university. This process follows the Higher Education Law No. 2547 regarding education and entrance to higher education, with students submitting the required documents within the announced deadlines each year.

Additionally, the Turkish Language and Literature Program also accepts students via lateral transfer. All these processes are coordinated by the Gaziantep University Directorate of Student Affairs.

Graduates who receive pedagogical formation training can work as Turkish Language and Literature teachers in educational institutions. Until the 2000s, the majority of graduates pursued careers as teachers. To some extent, academic careers and other professions were also options. Later, some of those who obtained teaching qualifications became teachers. There are also graduates working in private tutoring centers and private schools. Additionally, institutions such as archives, the Ministry of Culture, and other state organizations are among the workplaces of our graduates.

However, in recent years, an increasing number of our graduates have been pursuing careers in other professions, primarily in fields such as law enforcement, the military, and journalism.
