HISTORY: The name of our department, which was established in 1982 with the name of "Department of Printing and Publishing" and admitted students with a special talent exam for a long time, was changed to the Department of Press and Broadcasting in the 2001-2002 academic year, and our department started to accept students with a central exam. In June 2022, the name of our department was changed to "Journalism Department".
EDUCATION: Under the umbrella of our department, Journalism, Radio and Television Journalism, Press Ethics and Law, Press Theories, and Press Management and Economy, Internet Broadcasting, Broadcasting Design and Press Photography are taught under the branch of Journalism.

The main goal of the department is to train competent students in the field of digital journalism on the axis of communication, media and journalism information.

In the first two years of our education program, our students receive basic and theoretical information on different branches of science in addition to courses on general knowledge. In the last two years, our students, who have taken more applied courses, bring together the knowledge they have gained in four years within the scope of web publishing. For example, they can bring together the photographs they took in photography classes, the news they wrote in the courses on journalism practices, the newspapers and magazines they designed, and the programs they prepared using camera and editing systems in the courses on radio and television journalism.
In the third year, our students publish the newspaper called "Genç Anadolu"(Young Anadolu), which is the newspaper of our department; and in the last year, the magazine called "Genç Haber" (Young News) is published within the scope of the relevant courses. All of our students who are at the graduation stage can create their own personal websites and manage their social media accounts within the scope of the courses in our department.
OUR GRADUATES: Our graduates, who have knowledge and experience in the fields of newspapers, magazines, internet and social media, can generally take part in all of these fields on the axis of media and journalism.

Considering the positions in the sector, our students can have jobs in the fields of journalism, radio and television journalism, photography, press management and economy, broadcast design and internet publishing, which can be listed within the framework of the department's knowledge and application-based branches and courses.

Among our graduates, there are reporters, photojournalists, editors, news editors, news directors, editors in chief; page designers, visual directors; web designers, web publishers, bloggers, social media professionals; news camerapersons, news presenters, radio and television news programmers, documentary producers and directors.

Apart from the ones mentioned above, our graduates can have the opportunity to specialize in different fields by taking elective courses, minoring or double majoring in Cinema and Television, Public Relations and Advertising, and Communication Management and Design departments of our faculty, which will give them a chance to combine the education they received from our department with a second field and work in many different fields. It should also be mentioned that within the framework of credit system, students of Anadolu University can take courses from other faculties and have the opportunity to improve their knowledge in different fields.

The education and training are carried out in the form of formal education. Additionally, while theoretical courses are held in classrooms and lecture halls within the Faculty of Communication Sciences, practical training is conducted in laboratories and studios.

A variety of assessment methods such as mid-term(s), assignment(s), exercise(s), project(s), practice(s), and a final exam are implemented in the programme. Assessment methods may include classical test(s), multiple-choice test(s), homework(s), performance evaluation(s), and product evaluation(s). In order to graduate from the programme, cumulative GPA must be minimum 2.00. A course grade is constituted by evaluating the above stated elements and given by using letters. Letter grades and their associated coefficients are as follows;

In our department, process-oriented assessment is conducted in all courses. Therefore, throughout the semester, students' attendance to classes, completion of assignments and activities given in class, and active participation in in-class discussions determine their success. The assessment tools for each course are as follows:

1. Midterm exam (20%)
2. Assignments and activities (quizzes, readings, discussions, applications, assignments) (20%)
3. Final exam or Final project (60%)

The proportional distribution of assessment based on the structures of courses in our department, such as practical or theoretical, may vary. However, the midterm exam cannot exceed 40%, and the final exam cannot be more than 60%. In practical courses where the final exam is set at 60%, it can be combined with applied work and examination.

Assessment of courses is tailored to the structure of the course. For instance, in practical courses such as Newspaper Publishing, Photography, or Web Design, practical-based performance evaluations such as news reporting, photography, and/or web design are conducted instead of written exams or assignments.

The dates of exams are determined by the relevant academic unit's board of directors and announced to students at least 15 days before the exams of that semester.

For students who are unable to attend any of the midterm or final exams due to valid and compelling reasons determined by the Senate of our university, a makeup exam is arranged by the board of directors of the relevant academic unit.

Students who wish to take the makeup exam must submit a petition to the administration of the relevant unit with a document explaining their excuse attached, at least five working days before the announced exam date for that course or courses.

The contribution of midterm assessments to the final grade cannot be less than 40% or more than 60%. The final evaluation, considering the overall success level of all students taking the course, is determined by the teaching staff using letter grades (e.g., AA, AB, BA...).

To monitor the quality of higher education programmes;

- YOK is responsible for the planning, organisation, management and supervision of education, training and other activities in higher education institutions.

- The "University Monitoring and Evaluation Reports" of the higher education institutions, which are prepared according to the criteria established by the YOK, are published every year. Reports prepared on the basis of these reports, which include quantitative and qualitative evaluations of higher education institutions, are made available to the public by the YOK.

- The quality assurance of undergraduate programmes in higher education is carried out according to the " Procedures and Principles for Ensuring Quality Assurance of Higher Education Diploma Programmes":

1. Preparation and approval of curricula: The Council for Higher Education determines the minimum standards and criteria required for the opening of undergraduate departments and programmes in higher education institutions.

1.1. The curricula of undergraduate programmes in higher education institutions and the learning outcomes that each programme is intended to provide for students shall be determined by the senates of the higher education institutions in accordance with the basic principles established by the Council for Higher Education on these matters. 1.2. The curricula of the National Core Education Programmes shall be implemented by the higher education institutions with the approval of the Council for Higher Education, after having been approved by the relevant Council of Deans.

2. Measurement and evaluation: The measurement and evaluation of the learning outcomes that each undergraduate programme will provide to the students shall be carried out in accordance with the teaching and examination regulations prepared by the higher education institutions in accordance with the basic principles established by the Council for Higher Education on these matters.

3. Certification: Students enrolled in undergraduate programmes shall be awarded a bachelor's degree upon successful completion of the course credits and other obligations established by the higher education institutions.

4. Self-evaluation - external evaluation: As part of continuous monitoring, at the beginning of each year higher education institutions enter the previous year's "Internal Institutional Evaluation Reports" into the information system prepared by the Higher Education Quality Board (YOKAK). YOKAK makes the "Institutional Feedback Report" prepared by the external evaluation of higher education institutions available to the public. In addition, the accreditation decisions of the accreditation institutions authorised or recognised by YOKAK also show that the quality assurance of the programme qualifications is ensured. YOKAK conducts regular reviews of the qualifications established in accordance with the legislation.

Students who graduate from the department can generally work in all branches in the field of communication and media. Looking more closely at the fields of application in the sector, students will be able to have jobs in journalism, radio and television journalism, photography, media administration and economy, design and internet publishing fields. In this context, our graduates will be able to work in every field of communication, journalism, radio and television, accordingly in every stage of multimedia publishing. Among our graduates, there are correspondents, photojournalists, intelligence chiefs, editors, news directors, editorial directors; page designers, visual directors; web designers, web publishers, blog publishers, social media specialists; news cameramen and editors, news reporters, radio and television news programmers, documentary producers and directors.

Apart from this, our vocational elective courses, which our graduates can take from other departments, specialize in different branches within the framework of secondary branches. Our students can combine the education they receive from our department with a second field and have job opportunities in much different areas. The other departments of our faculty are Cinema and Television, Public Relations and Advertising, Communication Design and Management.

In addition, our students who want to be an academic focus on theoretical lessons and prepare themselves for their future goals. Our graduates may apply to master's or doctorate programmes in any field or proficiency in fine arts programmes. Apart from that, our graduates can benefit from the rights gained by undergraduate degree and can work as a public officer. Another addition of our graduates is the basic communication knowledge they acquire during their education period.
