Students will be able to communicate in the target language both in spoken and written, and reach the required language level that they can discuss about the topics in different fields. To communicate interculturally, and obtain required skills to interpret and perceive different cultures and develop cultural understanding. They will also have comprehended and made a better assessment of English Literature and American culture, Literature and history. They will be able to make an in-depth analysis of mythology, Classic, and Neo-Classic art insights; in addition, students will be able to perceive and assess those events which influenced the history of Europe such as Renaissance and Reformation. They will perceive such literary characters as Shakespeare who rank among the best not only in English Literature but also in the world Literature. Students will also be able to make an analysis of written texts related to Renaissance and other periods of history. They will get equipped with experience for the analysis and critical review of literary texts and necessary knowledge related to language learning and teaching. They will obtain and apply required information concerning academic text writing such as literature search, summarizing academic sources, borrowing information from academic sources by taking into account the ethical considerations. They will be able to write various academic texts such as research articles and theses by making use of academic sources. They become knowledgeable about various language teaching methodologies developed throughout the history of language teaching and prepare lesson plans appropriate for these methods and apply them in their teaching They will comprehend and make a better assessment of British and American drama, fiction and poetry. According to the rules of Van Yüzüncü Yıl University "Associate Degree and Undergraduate Degree Education-Examination Regulations", the students are required to take midterm exams, midterm studies (project, homework, laboratory, practice and similar studies) and final exams for each course. The contribution of the midterm exam is 40% and the contribution of the final exam is 60%. All exams are evaluated over 100 points. There is a requirement to take at least 50 points from the final exams. The department uses relative evaluation system. In addition, the form of assessment and evaluation applied for each course is defined in detail by the course instructor in the "Course Catalogue Form".

In order to study at undergraduate programs, it is required to pass the examination held by Assessment, Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM), and it is compulsory not to have registered at another formal higher education program. For foreign students, rules in YYU International Student Application and Registration Instruction are carried out.

Those who graduate from English Language and Literature programme have extensive job opportunities in the public and private sectors. They can work as academicians in departments such as English Language and Literature, English Language Teaching, and Comparative Literature at state and foundation universities. Graduates can work as English teachers on the condition that they complete the YYU Pedagogical Formation Certificate Program. They can work as copywriters in sectors like publishing and advertising. They can also work as translators in many public and private institutions.
